Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Transformation of the Metals Industry is committed to creating an inclusive, fair, and supportive environment where all students can thrive. We recognise that diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences strengthens our research and innovation.

The DigitalMetal CDT’s EDI activities are led by Dr Geert De Maere, who works closely with the CDT management and coordination team to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of the programme. Together, we are committed to maintaining a research environment where every student feels valued, supported, and able to succeed.

Recruitment & Admissions

We encourage applications from under-represented groups, including women, Black and minority ethnic candidates, and those returning to study. Professional experience is considered alongside academic qualifications. Recruitment materials are designed to reflect the diversity of our community, and interview panels receive training in equality, diversity and unconscious bias. Online interviews are available to ensure accessibility and fairness.

Training & Development

EDI is embedded throughout our training programme. Students are introduced to inclusive research practices during induction and continue to engage with EDI themes through transferable skills training, seminars, and retreats. Our training aims to build awareness, foster respectful collaboration, and support students in developing responsible research practices.

Student Support & Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is central to the success of the CDT. We seek to build a positive and supportive culture through our cohort-based model, peer mentoring, and inclusive training activities. At the same time, all students have full access to the comprehensive wellbeing and support services offered by their host universities, including counselling, accessibility and disability services, international student offices, and wider wellbeing initiatives.

By combining CDT-level community and mentoring with the professional support structures of our partner universities, we ensure that students are well supported both personally and academically throughout their doctoral journey.

DigitalMetal CDT is more than a training programme—it is an interdisciplinary community where diversity and collaboration are central. We welcome students from all backgrounds and are committed to building a supportive environment where every individual can thrive and contribute to shaping the future of digital metals.

In addition to CDT activities, students have full access to the support services at their home university. These include counselling, mental health and wellbeing hubs, student advisors, and personal and professional development opportunities. We encourage all students to make use of these services whenever needed.
